The Writer's Choice

This morning, when I logged into my Facebook account, I noticed I have a message in there. There was a question: What do you enjoy most about writing romance? That got me thinking about writing in general. Why do some people choose to be writers while others are content to be readers?
Personally for me, I chose to write because I was no longer satisfied with reading. When I discovered romantic suspense (to this day my favorite genre to read), I read so many of those books that they all started to look the same to me. I found myself predicting the outcomes and figuring out the killer’s identity within the first fifty pages. While reading, I would come up with plot twists that the authors never used. Eventually, I would come up with characters to go with those plots. My head became full of ideas, characters, and plots that were yet unwritten. Some of those ideas made chills run down my back (mystery) or my heart flutter with happiness (romance). I knew those stories would have to be told. I had to write them. Ever since I accepted the fact that one day I’ll be an author, reading other people’s writing has become enjoyable once more.
So what is your story? Why did you choose to write rather than just read?

  1. I suppose its similar for me. I was such a heavy reader growing up that I honestly ran out of stuff to read. At age 5, a new library was built down the street from me. I was thrilled and, after seven years, disappointed. There wasn't much in the genres I loved (Romance, Fantasy, Science Fiction and anything I could get ahold of about animals).

A contest called "Young Authors" came to my local school and I wrote. I won, repeatedly, and found my new addiction. I've been writing since, but have only recently felt my writing is strong enough to submit. :) Sorry it was so lengthy.

  3. I've been writing since I was about five. I just love creating. I love entertaining others. It's in my blood. It's what I do! I don't know how to explain it.

  4. Hi Angelina,

I suppose it's same with me. First I'm a very passionate reader...will read all types of books and enjoy.

But then I've this compulsion to make up my world and plots/storylines!

  5. Boy, that's a good question and I don't think I have an answer. It just happened.

I think I just felt the need to articulate an idea. I used to do it through painting, but for some reason, this time I picked up a pen. I never looked back after that.

  6. Wow, Angelina! From "While reading," on - ditto! My current WiP began as romance, but quickly evolved into romantic suspense.

I have an award for you at my blog.

  7. Interesting question - I never considered it one or the other, really. I've always enjoyed both reading and writing.
