Spoiled Plans and Fate

You all probably know that saying; if you want something, go for it.

My mom has been repeating that saying all my life, until a few months ago, she changed it up with something a little more fitting. "You need to figure out what you want first, then go for it."

Most of my life I've usually known what I wanted. But lately, my mind is an indecisive mess.

A few weeks ago, fate threw me a plan to finally figure out what I want. You see, I got invited to a vacation of a lifetime. Yup, a friend announced to receiving free, all inclusive tickets to a fun mountain destination for almost a whole week.

I wanted to go. Like really, really wanted to. How often do you get an offer for a free trip?! However, because of work obligations, I couldn't. With my boss being on vacation for three weeks, there is no way I could leave the office empty and unattended for a week. Clients would kill me and the company would probably shut the office down causing not only me to lose my job but my boss as well.

So I had to tell my friend to find someone else to take on this free trip.

However, this got me thinking about that whole "want" thing.

What do I want?

I've realized that when it comes to work, I never really got to do what I wanted, to the point that I didn't even know what I wanted. When I graduated high school, I fell into waitressing not because I wanted to, but because there was a job available and I was hired on the spot. And after I got out of waitressing and said I'll never go back (although I did go back for a short time), I fell into insurance. At that point, I had just wanted an office job and wasn't particular about what kind of office.

That got me thinking about what kind of job I really want. I want a job where I would be my own boss. Someplace where I wouldn't have to answer to anyone nor have anyone have to answer to me. A place where if I want to, I could go on vacation without having to find a replacement employee. Actually, I want a job where if it's cold in the winter, I wouldn't have to leave my house to go to work.

It would have to be a work from home job that I would enjoy.

And then it hit me. I already have my dream job, I just don't make much money at it, yet. But I plan to be more successful at it. Being an author is my dream job and I'm lucky enough that I have the opportunity to work at it.

What is your dream job?

In other news, I started a new website for my book cover designs. I didn't like the old one as it would only update on my windows computer (and I usually use my mac for everything) and it would be hard to customize. Check out my new site here: Angelic Designs.

  1. "You need to figure out what you want first, then go for it." Wise advice.

Being a full time author would also be my dream job...but for the moment, it's not possible. Currently, I'm just stuck in this limbo of not knowing what else I want while I strive to get that dream job (we've got a make a living somehow, meanwhile).

  2. I can count on one hand how many authors work full time at writing only. It really doesn't make as much money as you think.

And then there's getting medical insurance. I know one NYT author who went BACK to a regular corporate job because she couldn't afford the premiums for health insurance. The costs are obscene.

But you never know. You could turn out a runaway hit like Hocking or EL James--and then you can buy me a Coke. :)

  3. I wish I had been half as wise as you are at your age. No worries, Angelina. You'll get where you want to go. I got a good feeling. :)

    P.S. Love the new website.
