Review: A Tragedy

I don't normally post book reviews on my blog. That is what goodreads is for. However, I recently read a book that I was so impressed with that I had to share it here.

What is so impressive about this book?

It's a tragedy. I love tragedies, but most publishers shy away from publishing those. I've loved tragedies ever since I read Macbeth and Dr Faustus. Those are, to this day, my favorite tragedies. There is something special about those books, the way they portray the characters' sins and how they slowly have to pay for them. In Dr Faustus, the doctor descends into hell for his sins, while in Macbeth, Lady Macbeth slowly goes insane.

In this new book by this new author, the characters too pay for their sins, in very realistic ways.  Read below the read the review.

When I read the blurb to this story, I really wasn’t expecting anything great. I mean, how good could a story about adultery and confession be?

It could be AMAZING!

For years, I’ve been wishing to find an author who would push the boundaries and write something controversial. I’ve searched for a story of deep, realistic emotion and a tragic ending. Ever since I’ve read Shakespeak’s Macbeth back in high school, I’ve wanted to find something as dark. I found it in Sinful Urges.

The entire short story takes place in the priest’s point of view as he has to listen to Juan and Maria share their sinful story. A story that started with just innocent lust and ended with guilt and obsession. The Father tries to talk them out of their sinful attraction, but with each confession, the story gets deeper and darker. As the pages turned, I got into Juan and Maria’s heads, and then was taken to the point of no return.

The author portrayed adultery so realistically that I was absolutely amazed. Someone always ends up getting hurt, and there are all kinds of emotions in the mix. She pulled out those emotions to the surface by having the reader get into those characters heads.

As this short story came to an end, I found my mouth gaping open as shock settled over me and the word “Wow” slowly dripped from my mouth. Really, the ending blew my mind.

This is not a story of romance. It doesn’t have a happily ever after. Sinful Urges takes us back to the days when tragedy was popular, and honestly, I used to love tragedy. I loved Shakespear and Marlow. I’m been so disappointed lately that tragedy wasn’t so well loved anymore. I’m glad to have found an author who has the guts to bring this dark genre back.

I don’t normally recommend books but this one is coming highly recommended from me.

I want more of this kind of darkness and tragedy. I want more guilt and obsession. I want another book from this author!

  1. I always like an ending to be happy. This story sounds interesting, and now because of you I have to read it. lol..
You might like my suspense/thrillers if they ever find a home. They are about events that could happen to any women in the world. I use the tag line, 'It could happen to you.' Hopefully you might get to read them one day.

I'm going to down load Sinful Urges. That is if it's available. I'll let you know what I think of it. :)

  2. I'm a reader trapped in the desire for a HEA but too aware of consequences for our actions that, unless it's done right, the HEA doesn't feel genuine to me and turns me off.

Tragedies aren't as popular, but more people are gaining an appreciation for realistic outcomes to poor choices or just choices period. This does sound like a sinful delight. Thank for the recommendation.

    1. Most of the time I prefer a happy ending too, but this book just wasn't as HEA kind of book. It wouldn't have felt right for this book to end happily.
