Life and Death

How was everybody’s weekend? Mine stank.

Saturday morning, I woke to a phone call from my mother. Grandma was rushed to the hospital again. Unsatisfied with the care she received in the hospital last week, Grandma refused to seek medical help unless my uncle took her to a different hospital. The hospital my uncle took her to did a bunch of test and found a couple of health problems. I visited her and she seemed a lot happier in this hospital then the last. They are feeding her better food, giving her better care, and all around she says she feels like she’s in a hotel. I’m optimistic about her getting better but I also have regrets for not spending as much time with her lately. The last couple of years, I’ve been so busy with a demanding job that I didn’t have the time or energy for anything else. So that was my Saturday.

Sunday wasn’t any better. It started out as a good day until mid-afternoon when my stepdaughter ran to me with tears in her eyes. She was frantic and although she tried to say something, I couldn’t understand the mumbled speech. Since my stepdaughter cries like ten times a day over one thing or other, I wasn’t fazed by the tears and thought that maybe she got into a fight with one of her friends. So I turned to the friend and asked what happened. Her pet hamster died. We all rushed into her room to check, and yup, she was dead. My kiddo started blaming herself although hamsters don’t live long and she had this one for about a year or so. We were all devastated. The hamster was her baby.

Needless to say, after a sad weekend like this one, I want some good news for a change. So if anybody has anything happy to share, make my day and share it.

Now some news.

My blog tour for “Indecent Encounters” will be from February 7th to February 18th. I will dish a lot of secrets and fun things. I will share my publishing story, a writing tutorial for those dreaded query letters, how I broke the news to my prudish mother that I was publishing erotica, amongst other great topics. There is also a giveaway. So check out my blog from Feb 7th to the 18th.

  1. Hope your grandmother gets better, Angelina. And give your stepdaughter a hug from me. Losing a pet is tragic at that age.

  3. Wow, your step-daughter does the same thing my 5 year old son does. He cries so often that I can't tell when the bad things have honestly happened; until I see blood.

Glad your grandma is getting the care she believed she needed. Should put her on the road to recovery.

I'd tell you to go get a new hamster; but it's hard to find one that isn't all bitey and crap. Evil things, hamsters!

  5. Hi Angelina,

Hope your grandmother gets better. And give your stepdaughter a hug from me also. Losing a pet is tragic at that age.

  6. I think it's a good sign that your grandma is so spunky! I love it. And I'm glad she would settle for poor care! I hope that they heal her completely at this hospital.

Hamsters are not good pets for sensitive girls. Unless you do what my parents did. I thought hamsters lived forever because we had Speedy for twelve years or so. I guess I never caught on that he lost weight, gained weight, changed colors...It was actually six different hamsters. Mom later fessed up to switching them out. That whole two to three years of life thing was going to be too traumatic on me, she feared. I think I could have handled it. I would have cried like your stepdaughter, but I would have gotten over it.

  8. Wishing your grandmother many more happy, healthy years!

I once pondered death of pets, and why they didn't live long enough... and I had a friend tell me it's God's way of helping us learn how to deal with loss in smaller ways before we have to deal with it in bigger ways.

I think that's a little true. Losing a pet is horrible, but we discover that we can get past it and move on. Give your step-daughter a hug from me (I lost my fair share of rodents in my lifetime...)
